Indie Movie Review: Scott Pilgrim (Spoiler Free)

YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE!!!  Brian and I had the opportunity to see Scott Pilgrim vs. the World last Thursday and we jumped at the chance.  (We really wanted to record a podcast, but our schedules didn’t line up.)  In a year with a ton of comic book movies, this is the movie that I have been looking forward to the most this year and I had high expectations for it.  Brian and I have been constantly talking about how much we enjoyed the movie and how we both can’t wait to see it again.

The story (if you are unaware) is about the battles between Scott Pilgrim and the “seven evil exes” of his girlfriend, Ramona Flowers.  The movie (and comic book series) is a tribute to video games and really comes off a video game version of real life.  The movie was visually stunning like no other movie I have seen.  It is not filled with stunning CGI effects that blow the viewer away, but more that CGI permeates the movie to accent every scene and leave a distinct impression upon the viewer.  Fans of video games should see this movie as it is the best video game movie ever.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World is hilarious and is by far the funniest movie Michael Cera has been in since (maybe ever?) Superbad.  I have been feeling a little bit of Michael Cera fatigue as of late, but he is more Scott Pilgrim than Michael Cera (though you still see himself in the character).   The jokes come fast and are unrelenting.  There were several jokes in the movie that missed because the audience was still laughing from the last.

Scott Pilgrim vs the World successfully merges the visual cues of a video game with a story about being in a band and fighting against the  anxieties of young love.  While it is the funniest movie I have seen in a long time, there is depth to the characters and subject matter that places Scott Pilgrim above many other movies.  Join me on opening weekend in enjoying my new favorite movie Scott Pilgrim vs the World.
