Pantheon books is known primarily as a book publisher. In recent years it has made a name for itself as the publisher of quality graphic novels such as Asterios Polyp by David Mazzucchelli, as well as works by Charles Burns, Dan Clowes, Alex Ross, Marjane Satrapi, Art Spiegelman, and Chris Ware.
Their upcoming slate of releases is equally as impressive. Craig Thompson’s long-awaited Habibi will be released in September. Metamaus celebrates the 25th anniversary of the release of Art Spiegelman’s MAUS. Metamaus will include “a DVD with never-before-seen panels, a home movie, and other objects relating to the original publication of Spiegelman’s groundbreaking original comic book.”
Both of those seem like they are right up Pantheon’s alley. In addition, their sister imprint, Schocken Books is publishing its first ever graphic novel. UNTERZAKHN by Leela Corman will be on sale in March. Unterzakhn is described as, “a mesmerizing, heartbreaking story of immigrant life on New York’s Lower East Side at the turn of the 20th century.”
So, how does Pantheon decide to stir up buzz for Unterzakhn? By giving away panties at SDCC.
Yes, you read that correctly. Pantheon books is giving away women’s underwear at the San Diego Comic Con.
To their credit, they have a “reason” for this. According to Pantheon publicist Josefine Kals, “as some of you may know, the word “unterzakhn” is Yiddish for “underthings.” Um. No, I wasn’t aware of that. I guessnow the only question is, will the SDCC undies look like this
or like this
Guess we will all find out at SDCC. I can only imagine a scene like this will ensue.
