Two Local Shops Nominated For Spirit of Comics Retailer Award

A little Stumptown pride for a moment. Two local comic shops have been nominated for The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award!

Both Bridge City Comics and Things From Another World are Portland area fixtures. While TFAW has grown to be a force to be reckoned with through its on-line presence and close ties to Dark Horse (the chain is owned by Dark Horse president Mike Richardson), it has never lost its commitment to promoting and showcasing local creators.

Bridge City Comics is one of Portland’s newest comic shops. However in its relatively short existence (7 years, but who’s counting?) Mike Ring has staked out his little spot in North Portland and turned Bridge City Comics in to a comic oasis. It is where I first heard Marian Call and the Double Clicks. It is where I sat down to interview Matt Southworth (with Mike keeping the shop open late to make time for me). It is where I met another fan of Andy Lee. And it is where my daughter got to meet the creators of Baby Mouse. Mike is a stand up guy and it is great to see him and his shop get a little recognition.

The Will Eisner Spirit of Comics Retailer Award is presented under the auspices of Comic-Con International: San Diego and is given to an individual retailer who has done an outstanding job of supporting the comic art medium both in the community and within the industry at large. Each year Comic-Con honors retailers from around the globe with the award, named after the visionary creator of The Spirit. When Eisner approached Comic-Con about initiating the award in the early 1990s, he wanted it to acknowledge the important role that comics retailers play in the industry, nurturing the relationship between creators and their readers.
