Peanut butter and chocolate. Canadian bacon and pineapple. Mark Waid and Chris Samnee. Two great tastes that go great together!
Waid and Smanee’s first issue of The Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom hits stores today and it is everything one could hope for! There is action, adventure, hot dames, cool costumes, and a bit of intrigue and horror hinted around the edges. Who could ask for more?
Cliff Secord is called in to action as the Rocketeer when Peev’s niece is involved in a terrifying air mishap. Of course, this rescue does nothing to dampen her feelings for Secord, despite the fact that she does not know he is the Rocketeer. However, Secord’s bombshell of a girlfriend is not so excited about all the attention her man is receiving. Meanwhile, a mysterious freighter docks in Los Angeles, with a cargo so dangerous…well, the book is called Cargo of Doom for a reason.
Waid turns in a pretty decent script. I would love to say that it blew my socks off, but it didn’t. It was a good script and definitely has me wanting more. I am curious to see how the love-triangle works out, and the mystery of the cargo is definitely intriguing. But this issue was all introduction and set up. It is not a self-contained issue and is not designed to be that way. I just think it could have has a little more pop to it.
Where the issue does pop is in Samnee’s art! This guy can draw!!!!! Samnee embues each character with their own personality using body language as well as a keen sense of light and shadow. I think the only way this book could have looked any better is if it was just in black and white, really letting his pencils and inks shine on their own!
Rocketeer: Cargo of Doom #1 is a solid start to what should be a great series. While the issue may not blow you out of the water right away, the quality of the creative team and the strength of the premise has me believing that this will shape up to be a great series.
