Yes, you heard that right.
No, I am not forgetting that Disney owns Marvel and The Avengers was the hottest thing since Avatar. But, see, The Avengers is a Marvel property. Marvel created it. Marvel grew and nurtured it. Disney just cashed the checks. Disney is out to prove that they still have the ability to create a blockbuster on their own.
Disney has at least one super hero property of its own and they are looking to dust off the mothballs and bring it back out for a spin.
Vulture is reporting that disney is actively trying to get a Rocketeer relaunch off the ground (no pun intended). It would definitely be a step in the right direction for Disney which has seen its own brand shrink as its subsidiaries have grown.
Originally released in 1991, The Rocketeer made $46,704,056 and was widely considered a flop (especially considering it cost a reported $40,000,000 to make). However, times have changed. CGI has taken the place of green screens and clumsy wiring harnesses. Summer blockbusters are built around superheroes now instead of romantic comedies. The time may be right for the return of the Rocketeer.
