When Peruggia was apprehended with the Mona Lisa, he claimed he had stolen it for patriotic reasons. He said he wanted to return the Mona Lisa to Italy where it had been before it was “stolen” by Napolean. The only problem was that da Vinci actually took the painting to France 250 years before the birth of Napolean to present it as a gift to King Francis I.
