The Peruggia in question is none other than Vincenzo Peruggia, the man who stole the Mona Lisa. Peruggia was a former Louvre worker who perpetrated the greatest art heist in history by posing as part of the cleaning crew and sneaking the Mona Lisa out under his smock! While Peruggia claimed to have stolen the piece for “Patriotic” reasons, the another theory is that he was hired by an international criminal who had plans to sell forgeries.
