The Virgin Project

The Virgin Project grew out of an installment at the Seattle Erotic Arts Festival.  K.D. Boze and Stasia Kato sat down with people and asked the mto re-tell the story of their first time having sex.  Boze and Kato listens, then quickly turned the stories in to comic strips.  The strips were posted on the walls of the festival for all to read.  The project was a hit, and they repeated it at SEAF and otehr festivals.  The Virgin Project is a collection of some of those stories.

Losing one’s virginity is an almost universal experience;  the population reaching 7 billion is testament to that.  However, for something so common, each person’s experience is unique and personal.  Each story in this collection is unique.  While they may share certain elements (nervousness, getting caught, copious amounts of alcohol) no story is ever repetitive or derivative.

The same can be said for the art.  There are over 30 stories told in this volume, however the art for each story is tweaked slightly to reflect the tone and mood of not only the experience, but of the person relating the story.  Young, old, gay, straight, punk or hippie, everyone has a voice and everyone is special.

Anyone expecting a frat-party style retelling of first-time stories is in for a rude awakening with The Virgin Project.  The lead story hits the reader right between the eyes and leaves them with their jaws on the ground.  The follow up story, while fun and not nearly as shocking as the first is, again, probably not what many people are expecting.   And all this is a good thing.  The Virgin Project could easily have been something that is better suited for the pages of Penthouse Forum.  However, in the hands of K.D. Boze and Stasia Kato, each story is treated with love and respect.  Far from titillating, we are invited to share in an individual’s special (or not so special) moment.

This is the first volume of the Virgin Project.  A second volume was released in 2010.  Given the number of adults on the planet, it seems that Boze and Kato will not run out of material any time soon.  I, for one, am looking forward to reading the next volume (and any more volumes that come out after that!).
